What fun this week has been! Students in all third grades have been designing “raceways” from the recycled items. Thanks to all of you who sent so many recycled items to school! From the “blueprints,” pairs of students “bought” the recycled items they needed from a mini class Home Depot. Each pair of students had a shopping bag. The rule was that no pair could buy materials worth over $2.00.
On Tuesday, 3F and 1D made wonderful structures out of the recycled materials parents sent in! It was such a lovely afternoon, building and building and building…3F students got to take their structures home…not before I got to take pictures for the slideshow!
On Wednesday, students took their shopping bags and started to build raceways. A marble had to start at the beginning of the raceway, and go all the way through the raceway. The collaboration of all of the pairs of students has been so fantastic this week! Our structures unit is now finished!
In Math, students continue to think about the input and outputs of numbers in order to figure out the “rule” of various machines. Rules can be any operation – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division. Rules might be one or two steps! Each day, the solving of each problem gets progressively difficult. Students have also been introduced to fractions with rules!
Hopefully, by Friday, our Structure magazines will have been completed. The interesting information and poetry included in these magazines are superb! Students have learned so much about famous structures located all over the world. The history of these structures was most compelling for 3F students.
Students have begun to use Raz-Kids in class. Over vacation, students are encouraged to use Raz-Kids at home, every day if possible! If you are going away, please have your child bring lots of books to read. I am very happy with the choices of books your children have been taking out of the library. Students are starting to read longer books of all varieties.
Next Monday and Tuesday, students will be creating part of their third grade portfolio and making a new bulletin board in the classroom. Bins will be cleaned and new seats will be given to get ready for the new year!
